Overview
James Stevens is a dedicated butler who has devoted his life to the service of his master. He is deeply devoted to duty, and he remains loyal to his lord even though it slowly becomes clear that he has some sympathies with the Nazi party. This butler never betrays any emotion, insisting upon decorum above all else, but all of his politeness comes at a price. His world is shaken for the better with the arrival of Miss Kenton, a lively maid whose spirited approach to life he finds both refreshing and agitating. He finds himself growing very attached to her, but he does not believe that it is within the realm of etiquette and good form to pursue a relationship with this extraordinary woman.
