Adapted from a novel by Jessamyn West, this drama focuses on the lives of the Birdwells, a Southern Indiana Quaker family whose members find themselves at odds with each other once Civil War breaks out. As the Confederate Army approaches their farm, the oldest son Josh breaks with the religious conviction of pacifism he grew up with by taking up his rifle in order to shoot at Army members, only to be injured himself in return. Every member of the Birdwell family must ultimately choose whether or not he can continue to remain pacifist or to engage in violent behavior to some degree in order to protect property as well as lives.
