This fictional Caribbean island paradise mirrors the many real islands colonized under the auspices of the British Empire during the period of colonial rule. Follow a young black man with aspirations to political success as he encounters the themes of racism, hegemony, the ideology of Imperialism, and cultural conscience during a time when the options of those who were not English subjects were limited to the point of nonexistence. Playing off this ambitious islander are a family of British expats who call the island home. Their daily lives provide an interesting thread in the tapestry of colonial island life, and a counterpoint to the brutal treatment of non-white populations.
