Overview
Shy teenager, Drew Tate, goes on a family vacation visiting rich relatives at Martha's Vineyard. Drew's parents worry about his odd behavior, he talks to a doll named Iago. When Drew accidentally starts a garage fire, his future seems dim. Drew's affluent family enjoys spending time at a beach nicknamed the Inkwell. The beach is the place to be while mixing with other affluent African-American families. The fun atmosphere on Martha's Vineyard is marred by family feuding. Aunt Francis and Uncle Spencer are hardcore conservative Republicans who clash with former Black Panther Kenny. Meanwhile, Drew struggles to grow up emotionally while making some unlikely friends. During the Bicentennial the Inkwell is lit up with fireworks. Drew experiences his own personal fireworks with a girl named Heather.
