Overview
Kate Croy's overbearing aunt will not allow her to marry the man she loves, poverty-stricken journalist Merton Densher. When Kate meets wealthy American heiress Milly Theale, she sees a chance to acquire the money she needs to marry Merton. Kate hatches a terrible scheme to secure a share of the girl's enormous fortune. Ignoring Merton's opposition to her plans, Kate arranges for Milly to invite Merton on a fabulous Venice vacation. Her scheme seems destined for success, but an unexpected occurrence changes everything.
