Overview
A woman named Penny decides to take over her father's unsuccessful horse farm when his health fails, despite her complete lack of knowledge concerning horses or the sport of racing. She meets up with a friend of her father's who owes a foal to the flagging farm. Together, they obtain a foal named Secretariat who is very promising, out of one of hr father's mares. Though the horse gets off to a rocky start in racing due to a young and inexperienced jockey, his career becomes a sensation when he is handled by a better rider. An abscess in the horse's mouth causes him to lose an important race, and hope flags for bit. Eventually, Secretariat wins the Triple Crown, which is horse racing's highest honor.
