Overview
Homer Hickam is the teenage son of a coal miner. He lives in hardscrabble country and is surrounded by practical people. However, he has big dreams. After the launch of Sputnik, he decides that he wants to build a rocket of his own that will be capable of going into space. He and some of his friends find this a very worthy goal, and they begin a series of experiments, many of which fail miserably. Homer's father heartily disapproves of his son's ambition and often tells him so, but Homer is determined. Although he faces such opposition from his father, he has a very powerful advocate in one of his teachers, who believes that he might have what it takes to win a national competition.
