Overview
In Stockholm, a translator, David, is approached by his publisher to translate the most recent work of an author, Germund Rein, whose works he had previously handled with some enjoyment. Oddly, the publisher provides him with the original manuscript and a letter that states that the work must never be published in Rein's mother tongue. Rein had apparently killed himself days earlier while at sea after forwarding the work and letter to the publisher as his last request. When David begins the translation, he makes a horrifying discovery: The manuscript seems to describe portions of his own life. To find out how this came to pass, David must do more than read a story. He must investigate its origins no matter where it takes him...
