Rudolf Nureyev, a rule-breaking, male ballet dancer from the Soviet Union in the 1950s, falls in love with Western ideas and opportunities during the Cold War.
When Rudy becomes so famous that his name is known around the world, he's given more opportunities to travel and meet Western artists and celebrities. His KGB handlers though also give him even more restrictions and insist that he can't talk or go anywhere with capitalist foreigners.
When Rudy refuses to fall in line, the KGB begins to put pressure on him until he imagines that defection to the West is the only possible way to obtain freedom.
