The triumphs of 11th-century Spanish military leader Rodrigo Diaz, also known as El Cid, are chronicled. After the death of King Ferdinand in 1065, his territorial holdings are divided between his children. With the siblings in contention about the legality of the division, a young El Cid becomes military commander for Ferdinand's oldest son Sancho. After the suspicious assassination of Sancho in 1072, El Cid becomes the military commander for Sancho’s brother Alfonso. Conflicts among the descendants of Ferdinand occur within the broader context of medieval religious strife affecting Spain and the region at large. El Cid is exiled by Alfonso for a period but later recalled, due his capabilities and strategic military value. |
