Returning to Rome from war, Caius Martius is hailed as a hero by the very people he despises. In recognition of his efforts, he is bestowed with a new name, Coriolanus. He is also persuaded by his mother, Volumnia, to run for the Senate, although to do so he must hide his hatred of the common man. Afraid that Coriolanus will attempt to seize even more power, other senators work behind the scenes to stir up riots which are ultimately blamed on Coriolanus, causing him to be banished from Rome. Swearing his revenge, Coriolanus seeks out an alliance with his mortal enemy, Tullus Aufidius, with whom he plots an overthrow of the Roman government. Volumnia and Coriolanus' wife, Virgilia, persuade him to instead reach a peace treaty with Rome, which causes Aufidius to turn on Coriolanus, setting up a final showdown in which one must die. |
