| Overview
This made-for-TV miniseries loosely follows the blockbuster book by the same name. Tom Builder, a medieval mason living during the period of English history known as "the Anarchy," is commissioned to begin work on a cathedral. The tragic death of his wife has left him with the care of his children, one of whom he is forced to abandon because he simply cannot feed them all. Meanwhile, high-born Lady Aliena must fend off the unwanted affections of William Hamleigh, an earl's son who is contending with Aliena's younger brother for a royal title. Forced to make her own way in the world after William destroys her wealth, Aliena marries the hapless Alfred, who promises to restore her brother's royal titles, although she is in love with a mason named Jack. |
