Overview
Francis Phelan has been losing himself in drink on a daily basis ever since accidentally killing his son and abandoning his family at the height of the country's Great Depression. He finds a suitable drinking companion as well as romantic partner in Helen Archer, a woman suffering a terminal illness who he meets at a mission in Albany, New York. Francis scrounges for bar money by taking odd jobs, tries to reconnect with his wife and children, and finds that his life is altered when local do-gooders join forces to drive homeless individuals like Francis and Helen out of their community.
