Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, Dreamgirls is set in 1960s Detroit. Curtis Taylor, Jr. is a car salesman who is able to break into the business of music. He discovers and signs a young and talented trio, the Dreamettes, as backup to rhythm and blues performer, James "Thunder" Early. They soon become headliners, as Taylor puts the overweight and strong singer Effie, the former lead, to the back and brings to the front the beautiful Deena Jones. As proud Effie struggles with poverty, Tayor brings the Dreams and Deena to the top of the charts and the business. The high cost of fame on friendship and relationships is examined as the Dreams become hit-machine superstars, and Effie awaits her due.
