Based on a true story, Héctor Lavoe comes to the United States from Puerto Rico in the early 1960s to introduce salsa music to the people of New York. In Puerto Rico, he was a teen heart throb, and success comes quickly in New York, but at a price. He falls into the stereotypical addictive drugs and alcohol scene, and the struggles with his wife and family are a main hurdle to his rise to stardom. The conflict of talent on the public stage and struggles in his private life off stage is highlighted, making for a tragic portrayal of the man who brought salsa music to the United States.
