While in Vietnam, Jacob Singer witnesses his unit coming under heavy fire and exhibiting abnormal and violent behavior. When Jacob tries to flee he receives a bayonet to the stomach. Four years later, Jacob continues to experience vivid and horrifying hallucinations of his time in Vietnam. One of Jacob’s old Army buddies contacts him reporting similar hallucinations. Jacob is kidnapped by supposed government agents who try to silence him. Jacob escapes and is approached by Michael Newman, an Army chemist during the war. Michael tells Jacob of a secret chemical called “The Ladder,” which the Army used during the war to increase aggression in its soldiers.
