Overview
As a senior citizen, the great silent film director Charlie Chaplin recalls crucial moments of his life to the man editing his memoirs. After spending much of his childhood in a British labor house, Chaplin’s older brother Sydney lands him a role in a play. From there, Chaplin becomes a famous music hall entertainer and eventually moves to the U.S. He then conquers Hollywood with the Tramp, his humble movie persona. Chaplin also marries four women and romances many others. In retirement, Chaplin resides in Switzerland because J. Edgar Hoover, head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has exiled him. Hoover, who’d long considered the comedian an enemy, manages to expel Chaplin after discovering that he'd impregnated a teenage girl.
