When his grandfather dies, 12-year-old Billy Heywood learns that he has been willed the ownership of the Minnesota Twins. When Billy and the team's manager cannot see eye to eye, Billy fires him and takes his place on the bench. With an encyclopedic knowledge of baseball, Billy begins to turn the Twins around. At the same time, Billy has problems dealing with all the pressures that come with running a team, from having to let go under-performing players to not being able to spend time with his friends from school. Ultimately, Billy leads the Twins to a winning streak late in the season, setting the stage for a one game tiebreaker playoff with the Seattle Mariners.
