Overview
Normal Dale arrives as the new basketball coach at tiny Hickory High, knowing this is the last shot he has. His unconventional, hard-nosed ways meet opposition from the basketball-obsessed townsfolk who nearly run him out of town before the season's over. He recruits shy but ultra-talented Jimmy Chitwood, who decided to take the year off after his dad died, back to the basketball court and takes on Shooter, another player's alcoholic father, as an assistant coach. He strikes up a relationship with Myra Fleener, a fellow teacher who originally opposed him, and things start to change. The team comes together, wins over the townspeople and makes a run deep into the Indiana state basketball playoffs, all the way to Butler Fieldhouse and the championship game.
