Jesminder Bhamra, called Jess to her friends, is a young Indian woman who lives in London. Her traditional Indian family does not understand her obsession with football (soccer) and won’t allow her to play. However, Jess has an Anglo friend names Jules who convinces her to try out for the local women’s team for which she plays. The two girls cement their friendship as Jess becomes a wonderful asset to the team. They struggle for a time with the fact that they both have a crush on their coach. Things become more complicated when Jess’ family realizes she’s been playing against their wishes. Many things come to a head at the huge, traditional Indian wedding that Jess’ family gives her sister. |
