Overview
The title character in "Bridget Jones's Diary" is a foul-mouthed, overweight Englishwoman accustomed to recording all of her thoughts in her diary. She has a very distinctive way of constructing her sentences, usually very clipped, almost as though she were composing text messages. Bridget finds herself torn between two men, one a promiscuous longtime crush, the other a dorky acquaintance from childhood whom she initially hates. Borrowing heavily from Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," it includes tips of the hat in terms of plot elements and character names. Bridget is very close to her father and has a difficult relationship with her wild and unfaithful mother. She is determined to secure her own happily ever after but finds that the frustrations of life keep interfering.
