Playwright David Shayne is making his Broadway debut in 1928. He finds the challenges of writing for Broadway bigger than he reckoned on, especially when he has to hire Olive, the ditzy and not so talented girlfriend of his shady financial backer, in order to ensure that his play has adequate funding. Olive’s bodyguard is a tough gangster named Cheech. This makes Shayne nervous, but it turns out that Cheech has an ear for theater. He makes terrific suggestions for the play which Shayne decides to take without giving him credit. Meanwhile, Shayne is also over his head in an affair with his leading lady Helen, a highly strung alcoholic. When his leading man falls for Olive, more trouble ensues.
