The brutality of war is on full display in this depiction of one of the cruelest battles of the Vietnam War. The battle, which took place in May of 1969, involved U.S. troops trying to take over a hill held by the Vietnamese. They were very determined to take this piece of land, but every assault that they tried led to horrific casualties. The name "Hamburger Hill" comes from the fact that the Vietnamese artillery was so ferocious that it shredded through the American soldiers like hamburger. The depiction raises questions of whether these objectives are truly worthwhile when so much human life is destroyed in the process. In this dark chapter of an already dark war, the very worst of human nature is explored.
