Sethe is a former slave living with her daughter, Denver, as the Civil War comes to a close. Haunted by a poltergeist in her home, Sethe struggles to support her daughter with a horrific past just under her skin. Being raped repeatedly and sold amongst the white folk in the South, Sethe has an awful secret that is reflected by the poltergeist's presence. As her secrets slowly unfurl to the horror of her new houseguest, Paul D, a revelation in the form of a young girl appears on the doorstep. Beloved is her name. Beloved moves in and Denver comes to the conclusion that the strange new girl is her sister reincarnated. Forced to tell her secrets, Sethe admits that she killed Beloved to protect her from slavery years ago. Death was mercy for her soul. |
