In modern Argentina, a retired prosecutor sets his hand to a novel, drawing on the events of a homicide he investigated many years before. Benjamin Esposito never quite got over his long-ago infatuation with Irene, a smart and beautiful department chief who worked on the same case. Investigating the murder of a young woman in Buenos Aires, Esposito and his colleagues pursued a working-class suspect named Isidoro Gomez and eventually hauled him into custody; Gomez escaped the charges and then was hired as a hitman by members of Argentina's Peronist political faction. Gomez tracks down and murders a member of the investigating team that had been hounding him but is eventually captured by the victim's husband, who enforces his own brand of justice -- several decades spent in an isolation cell the husband builds near his country home. |
