Overview
Hanna Schmitz is a Nazi guard during World War II. She takes interest in a young man who reads to her after they make love. She enjoys these times because she is illiterate. Years later, Hanna is on trial for war crimes and those who worked alongside Hanna have decided to blame her for the worst offenses and giving the orders. The only evidence against her is written, and she is too proud to admit that she cannot read. She goes to prison for a considerably longer time than her former co-workers. While in prison, the young man with whom she once had the affair now sends her gifts and visits her on occasion.
