Eastern State University football coach Sam Winters has a problem. His bosses give him the ultimatum of putting a winning team on the field or losing his job. He hits the recruiting trail and brings in a talent crew of athletes, but all with questionable character traits. When practices commences in the fall, he fields a successful squad, but the price of glory is steep. His starting linebacker, Steve Lattimer, is using steroids to bulk up. His prized pro prospect, Alvin Mack, is functionally illiterate. His starting quarterback, Joe Kane, has a drinking problem. Winters wins on the field, putting together several successful games, but ends up with a football program that is rife with scandal, cheating and character issues that compromise any victories that ESU has.
