When Wendell Sonny Lawson is informed by his doctor that not only is he dying, but also that he does not have long to live, he bursts into tears and cries uncontrollably within a packed elevator. After going to a church to attempt to confess his sins, he meets a feckless novice priest. Upon meeting this priest, he tries to resolve issues that he is having with his wife Mary Ellen, his daughter Julie, and also his parents. He finds that they all seem to be so wrapped up in their own lives that they do not much care for his situation, leading him into the spiraling thought of suicide. He then pairs up with a mental patient in order to complete this task since he is at what appears to be the end of his rope. |
