Amanda is an orphaned young girl who is about to be adopted by a family who would only be using her for their own financial gain. She really wants to be adopted by her social worker, Diane, but Diane is single and unable to support a child alone. Alyssa is the young daughter of a wealthy man named Roger. When Alyssa finds out that her father is going to marry Clarice, a mean, child-hating woman, she decides to run away. Shortly after leaving home, Alyssa comes upon a summer camp where she meets Amanda. Shockingly, Amanda and Alyssa realize that they look exactly alike. The two girls bond, sharing their troubles, and decide to switch places. They believe that both of their problems will be solved if they set up Roger and Diane and form a family.
