Overview
Some time in 1914, a young Irish meteorologist named Friend travels to a remote South Atlantic island close to the Antarctic Circle to replace another meteorologist. Upon his arrival, he learns from the lighthouse keeper named Gruner that his predecessor disappeared and likely died from typhus. After nightfall, Friend finds himself under attack by mysterious creatures. When Friend has difficulty defending himself, Gruner agrees to allow him to live in the lighthouse if he helps fight off the creatures and accepts that Gruner has one of their females as his slave. At first, Friend accepts the deal, but in time he finds that he must overcome his fears of the frightening appearance of the creatures and face the monstrous actions of a fellow human being.
