Overview
Chi-Raq is a modern-day reimagining of Aristophanes's Lysistrata, a well-known ancient Greek play about a group of women's decision to withold sex from their husbands until the men ended the Peloponnesian War. Instead of Greece, however, Chi-Raq is set in contemporary Chicago, and instead of the Peloponnesian War, the conflict is the gang violence in the city. Focusing on the women's power move after the accidental death of a child, Chi-Raq uses an ancient play to tell an all too familiar story of sex, violence, and power.
