A short order cook from the small California town of Pico Mundo sees dead people and takes action. Opening his apartment door one morning and stepping out into the oppressive heat, Odd Thomas sees the ghost of Penny Kallisto. Penny beckons to him and leads him into the street, where Harlo Landerson pulls up to greet him in his convertible. Odd yanks the keys from the ignition and notes two scraps of white material falling from Harlo's pocket. The scraps finger Harlo as the rapist and murderer of Penny. Harlo flees the scene and Odd chases after him. The two enter a random home and engage in a fistfight where Harlo is knocked out. Odd calls the police and his friend, police chief Wyatt Porter, comes to the rescue and promises to keep Odd's name out of the investigation. |
