James Brown was born into an impoverished family in rural South Carolina in the wake of the Great Depression. His youth was marked by the harsh reality of abject poverty and racism in the rural South. Music, religion, athletics, brushes with the law, substance abuse and activism all played a role in shaping the incredible journey of his life. Known as the Godfather of Soul, James Brown is now recognized as one of the most influential figures in music and American culture in the 20th century.
