Genre(s): Thriller, Fantasy
In a storytelling technique similar to that of Pan's Labyrinth, this deals with two parallel tales, one that reflects ordinary life and one that is deeply fantastical. It is difficult to say which of the two is more intimidating, but both the woman and her teenage son must face some very difficult trials as each of them faces a fearsome monster. In the case of the mother, it's a dark lifestyle that she's embraced, and hers is a story that too many people can relate to as she finds herself spiraling out of control. For the son, it's an epic quest, and it's left to the audience to decide whether his experience is real or he is using his imagination to cope with painful circumstances.
