Dr. Helen Hudson is a forensic psychologist and consultant in voluntary exile in her San Francisco apartment. Having survived a past attack has made her agoraphobic, and she copes by using alcohol and pills. Helen is known for her literary work on serial killers and someone is recreating the murders found in her book, including those of the Boston Strangler and Son of Sam. Forced into a contest of wills with a copycat serial killer, Helen is aided by Detectives Monahan and Goetz who attempt to locate the murderer before he kills again. After her secretray is murdered, Helen becomes fearful for her life. Helen faces the killer in an intense climax where she must triumph over her own fears in order to rescue herself.
