While on a lecture tour in the United States, respected French marine biologist Pierre Aronnax is lambasted by the media when he speculates on the biological origins of a mysterious monster that is sinking ships in international waters. He is invited with his devoted assistant Conseil to accompany an American military expedition to find and destroy the monster. Unable to resist the chance to make an important discovery, Aronnax agrees. The search at first proves fruitless, but the monster eventually appears, sinking the American ship and setting Arronax and Conseil adrift with swaggering harpooner Ned Land. The three men encounter the monster which turns out to be a submarine helmed by the mysterious Captain Nemo. Virtual prisoners, the men embark on a fabulous underwater voyage of discovery, but the growing mental instability of the captain puts their lives at risk. |
