Wally Winthrop is a lonely woman eking out a living in New York City, 1998. In her restlessness, she fixates on what she imagines was the fairy tale romance between American divorcee Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII, who abdicated so as to wed her. Wally embarks on a New York journey of sorts in her attempt to discover what life was truly like for Wallis and Edward, including attending the Windsor Estate auction at Sotheby's several times. Gradually, Wallly begins to realize the reality for Wallis and Edward is nothing like she imagined. She becomes more acquainted with their story, told in flashbacks and chronicling their initial days together as glamorous jet setters to the ensuing decades when their lives began to slowly unhinge. |
