Trailer | Overview Many scholars debate whether William Shakespeare wrote the plays credited to his name. Some believe they were written by Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford. Anonymous provides a historical dramatic account of de Vere's life and the Essex Rebellion against Queen Elizabeth I. During his childhood, de Vere pens some plays later credited to Shakespeare and performs them before a young Elizabeth. He then, under the threat of arrest for writing seditious content, gives up writing and becomes the Queen's secret lover. Yet, as political strife unfolds, de Vere feels the need to help the Essex Rebellion through and begins crafting satirical plays. To protect his identity, he allows a young actor known as William Shakespeare to take credit for his work. |
