Overview
Trouble has arisen on a space station orbiting a vast ocean planet named Solaris. Kris Kelvin, a psychologist, is sent to find out what has happened to the crew. On arrival at the station, he finds it in disrepair and only two of the three scientists surviving. The third, his friend Dr. Gibarian, has committed suicide. Kelvin then wakes to find his wife, who years ago also committed suicide, confused and disoriented in his room. He launches her out into space in a capsule, but she returns the following night. Kelvin learns that the ocean is sentient and can read their minds, and that everyone has had similar hallucinations. The ocean seems to be able to recreate copies of people the astronauts have loved.
