Overview
Merlin, the legendary magician, receives the magical sword Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake and gives it to the violent Uther Pendragon in an effort to forge peace between warring kingdoms. After Uther is mortally wounded, he forces Excalibur into a stone. Using a spell, Merlin ensures the sword will remain there until Arthur, Uther's son, comes to claim it. At a tournament, Arthur, a young squire, stuns the kingdom by pulling Excalibur from the stone. He uses the wondrous sword to establish the kingdom of Camelot. For a time, there is peace and prosperity, but this period of happiness is fleeting. Arthur's queen and his best friend conduct an affair that threatens to break the kingdom, and Morgana, the king's half sister, plots to destroy him.
