Susan Traherne is an Englishwoman who has a one-night stand with a British intelligence agent while serving in the French Resistance during World War II. Her attitude and demeanor is irreparably changed by her experiences in the war. She returns to England and finds society trivial and inadequate. Her life in the 1960s shows her without empathy and regard for everybody around her. Her own husband declares that she is brutal and selfish after she intentionally embarrasses him. In the epilogue, she encounters the British soldier that she made love to 20 years earlier. They both come to the realization that the war changed their attitudes towards life. |
