Charles Ryder is a military man with a fond remembrance of his youth and a summer of endless amusement at Brideshead, a mansion in the English countryside. Although he once had artistic ambitions, and a bit of painterly talent, Charles studied history at Cambridge, where the most interesting characters on hand were a well-heeled brat pack of fun-loving aristocrats, including the intriguing Sebastian Flyte. Sebastian takes Charles home to Brideshead for a long summer of garden parties and awkward encounters with those who frown on incorrect sexual preferences -- including Sebastian's guardian angel Nanny. Charles finds romance, or at least infatuation, with Sebastian's sister Julia, while the fine paintings on the walls at Brideshead recall to him the unheeded, siren song of the artist's life. |
