Stephen Fleming, a British member of Parliament, begins an affair with his son Martyn's fiancée Anna. He begs her to leave Martyn, but Anna refuses. One day at Anna's apartment he meets a man there named Peter whom he believes to be another lover of Anna's, but she explains that he is mistaken and that they only slept together once after her brother's suicide. Anna's mother suspects the two are having an affair and privately tells Stephen to end it. He does so but cannot confess to his wife and son. On one last meeting with Anna, the two are discovered by Martyn who falls over a stairway and dies. Martyn's political career is ruined, and Anna goes on to a new life with Peter. |
