Overview
Convicted thief, Max Dembo, must report to his jerk of a parole officer, Earl, after being released from prison. Max is directed to find a job. He meets Jenny at an employment agency and asks her out to dinner. She accepts despite his ex-con status. Meanwhile, Earl wrongly accuses Max of using heroin and sends him back to jail. Max is shown to be clean and let out again. Earl tries getting Max to squeal on the real drug offender, but Max violently punishes Earl for this mistake. Max understands his actions prohibit him from turning straight. He goes back to robbing for a living. A botched robbery gets his friend killed. Max makes a fateful decision about he and Jenny that affects their future.
