The efforts of the 6th Army Ranger Battalion are chronicled as they heroically rescue over 500 American prisoners of war being held in a Japanese prison camp during World War II. Prisoners in the Cabanatuan camp in the Philippines are feared to be in danger of execution as Allied forces achieve further gains in the Pacific. Conditions at the camp are horrific, but the Filipino resistance is able to smuggle in quinine to treat malaria patients. After joint planning, American and Filipino forces are able to advance on enemy lines virtually undetected. The Japanese guards are caught off guard, and most are killed. Filipino guerilla fighters play a vital role in the raid and take the majority of casualties.
