Like millions of other men in the US during the 1950s, Tom Rath trudges off to work every day in his effort to support his wife and children. Tom is also haunted by memories of World War II and the men he killed in the line of duty. He constantly has flashbacks and is wracked with guilt over a beautiful Italian girl he had an affair with, but left behind. Just as Tom starts a new job, he discovers that he has a son in Italy.
