Tom and Mae Garvey are a Tennessee couple facing conflict from both nature and man. Their beloved farm is situated alongside a volatile river that usually keeps the land fertile but has the potential to flood their fields and wipe out the meager livelihood that has them on the brink of foreclosure. Facing the loss of everything he and Mae own, Tom takes up what unwittingly amounts to scab work at a steel mill to stay financially afloat. Meanwhile, Joe Wade, an entrepreneurial bank manager and land developer who has a history with the Garveys, attempts to exert pressure on the couple to sell the farm so that he can flood the valley and create a profitable hydroelectric plant.
