Mel is a new father who was himself adopted as an infant. When his son is born, he decides that he can't name the child until he gets in touch with his own roots. To find his biological parents, he takes his wife and son on a quest across the country from New York City to San Diego. When California turns out to be a dead end, the family heads on a wild goose chase from Michigan to New Mexico and beyond. Hijinks ensue, including a truck accident, a run-in with gay ATF agents, and an LSD trip.
