Trailer | Overview The central figure in "As Good As It Gets" is a surly writer named Melvin, who is played by Jack Nicholson. A man of peculiar habits and few interpersonal skills, he develops unlikely friendships with Carol, a sweet-natured waitress played by Helen Hunt, and Simon, a gay artist played by Greg Kinnear. When Carol takes off work to care for her ailing son and Jack designates Melvin as his dog-sitter after he's in an accident, the misanthropic Melvin's life turns upside-down. The movie is a charming, albeit sometimes off-color, movie about very different people learning to peacefully co-exist and develop real affection for each other. Its redemptive arc can be summed up in Melvin's big line, "You make me want to be a better man." |
