Overview
Vada Saltenfuss lives with her widowed father, who runs a funeral home. Hence, she is a rather morbid girl who is preoccupied with death, and her hypochondriac tendencies also make her a frequent visitor to the doctor. She finds solace in poetry and in the friendship of her frail friend Thomas J., who is allergic to everything under the sun. When Vada's father begins to date again, Vada thinks it's the end of the world, but gradually, she begins to understand that having an adult woman as an influence in her life might not be so bad. In one of the most formative summers of her life, she learns more about the world than she would care to, and Thomas J. is her greatest teacher.
